Having helped 100s of lawns over the past two decades in Wake County, we know the science and soil composition of lawns throughout the area.
The winter months are tough on your lawn. They can alter your yard’s soil pH, create conditions that are friendly to weeds and disease, and compact the soil. So, it’s critical to formulate an effective spring lawn care treatment program.
Here are some spring lawn care tips that will help maximize the beauty of your lawn:
Get Your Soil Tested
A soil test in the spring will reveal if the winter weather changed the pH levels in your turf. Lime can be added to acidic soil at any time during the growing season. If you plan on planting new grass seed in the spring, the early months are a great time to apply lime. The benefits of soil testing cannot be understated. Doing this quick little stip is an effective process for your overall lawn care maintenance plan.
Important Tip: just be sure that the existing grass isn’t wilted or covered in frost.
Control the Weeds
Spring lawn care is a balance between controlling weeds and growing grass.
Pre-emergent weed control also keeps grass seeds from sprouting, as well. If your lawn doesn’t have bare spots, then it may make sense to focus on weed control in the spring. A pre-emergent herbicide works by preventing weeds (and other seeds) from germinating.
These applications last around 3 months, and can also be applied again in the summer. Having a well-balanced weed control service will help your lawn thrive to its full potential.
Planting and Seeding
If your current lawn has a lot of bare spots, or you are planning on establishing a new lawn in the spring, then you will want to overseed your lawn as part of your spring lawn care plan.
An effective overseeding service is important, especially with the fescue grass that is so popular in North Carolina. During the summer months, North Carolina heat and disease here in Raleigh can cause the grass to have bare, or thin spots that won’t replenish on their own.
By overseeding your lawn in the spring, the grassroots will take hold and use the three months until summer to grow strong and deep – resulting in a beautiful lawn for you to enjoy in the warm, summer months.
Fertilize Your Lawn
While fertilizing is most effective in the fall, it can still be done in the spring as part of your spring lawn planning schedule. The key is to resist the urge to heavily fertilize your lawn. This is especially important if you have fertilized your lawn in the fall, as that fertilizer is still working on your lawn. Our fertilizing service works well for Raleigh and Wake County.
Important Tip: If you’ve overseeded your lawn in the spring, it’s important to apply slow-release nitrogen fertilizer, afterward. Five weeks after the grass germinates, you can then apply a quick-release nitrogen fertilizer.
Aerate Your Lawn
If your soil is extremely compacted, or you are overseeding your lawn in the spring, then lawn aeration should be part of your spring lawn care plan. Lawn aeration is the process of perforating your soil with small holes, which allows water, air, and nutrients to penetrate your grass.
A good lawn aeration service can be done using either manual or mechanical devices. Typically a lawn will respond best to core holes that are close and deep, usually, 3/4 to 4 inches in depth is the best.
